Selena Gomez Says ‘Best Thing’ About Her and Taylor Swift Dating the Jonas Brothers ‘Was Each Other’

Selena Gomez is looking back at the origins of her friendship with BFF Taylor Swift.

“Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers,” Gomez, 33, reflected on the Thursday, August 7, episode of the “Therapuss With Jake Shane” podcast. “I dated Nick and she dated Joe.”

She continued, “It’s cute. We were young. We all know and love each other now and it’s so cute. We didn’t know what we were doing [at the time]. But, yeah, she and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other.”

Gomez and Nick, 32, briefly dated in 2008 while they were both Disney Channel stars. Swift, 35, dated Nick’s older brother, Joe, 35, around the same.

The Only Murders in the Building actress said she and the “Wildest Dreams” singer quickly bonded over their respective breakups with the brothers, and she even got to hear Swift’s hit 2008 song “Love Story” before it came out.

“It was really sweet. I was about 15. She was about 18, and that’s when it was the crazy curly [haired] Taylor, and she had all these bracelets that went all the way up [her arm],” she said.

“I believe ‘Love Story’ was the first song she had ever played me and it wasn’t released yet. It was in a hotel room, I remember it vividly, and it was just like … it was one of those songs that I instantly heard and thought, ‘This is one of the most beautiful songs ever.’”

Gomez added, “So, at that age, we became best friends, bonded over the breakup — as girls do — and then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after. Here we are now, 16 years later.”

Both Gomez and Swift have spoken about their breakups with Nick and Joe, respectively, in the past. Swift famously shared on a November 2008 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that Joe broke up with her over the phone.

“You know what, it’s like, when I find that person that is right for me, he’ll be wonderful. When I look at that person, I’m not even going to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18,” Swift infamously said.

Gomez, meanwhile, looked back at her and Nick’s brief romance in an interview with the U.K.’s Capital FM radio station in 2015. “We were babies. That, to me, was like puppy love, you know. It was very sweet,” the “Same Old Love” singer said.

Since their teenage heartbreaks, Gomez and Swift have both found love with their current partners. Gomez is now engaged to music producer Benny Blanco, while Swift has been going strong with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce for around two years.
