There’s been a long held belief that two pop stars that rose to superstardom in the 80s have been involved in a four-decade long feud.

Cyndi Lauper, 71, revealed that she’s never been fighting with Madonna, 66, despite the many rumors about that over the years.

‘As soon as I saw her do Like a Prayer, I was like, “Oh my God. Ah, I love her!” And I’ve loved her ever since,’ the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun singer – who had sound issues during her Glastonbury set – told People.

‘In the ’80s, they started to pit women against each other,’ she said.

‘Well, actually, it started in the ’60s, the pitting of women against each other and wanting them to go back to what they’d been doing before women’s lib or whatever,’ she explained.

They have each won multiple Grammys and were trailblazers in the early days of MTV.

The rumor started in 1983 when Madonna released her eponymously named first album. Madge’s hits Holiday, Borderline and Dress You Up made her an instant superstar.

Lauper debuted her first album She’s So Unusual that same year. Her hits Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, She-Bop and Time After Time made her a radio and MTV favorite.

The two women shared big, colorful personalities and funky sartorial aesthetics. Their shared quirkiness led to those rumors that the two were at odds.

But the Madonna beef, she says, was simply made up, citing her appreciation for Like a Prayer.

‘As if you could only have one woman who is successful. What the hell is that about?’ she told The Guardian earlier this year.

‘That woman has been entertaining us for years. She’s made great pop songs. I want to be competitive, but not pitted against another woman. I’m not into that,’ Lauper added.

Madonna keeps a low profile while out after her brother’s death

Cyndi is gearing up for her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun farewell tour and shared the secrets to her long career in the music industry.

‘I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. It’s very boring,’ she said, despite her wild child aesthetic.

‘But because I was a singer, I had to watch out for my voice,’ she explained.

She added that she was never attracted to drugs, saying, ‘When you’re singing, if it’s all working out, that takes you to another planet anyway.’
