Ranger risks his life to save lion cub, what lioness does next is shocking
In 2022, a severe drought swept across the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.
Hot winds blew across the cracked, parched grasslands.
Water supplies were running low, forcing animals to travel farther than usual to find water.
Park rangers had to use water trucks to refill a deep well in the park.
Every three days, they visited the well to provide water in time.
Near this well, a mother and cub lion had separated from their pride and lived in isolation.
They discovered that the well was an abundant source of water, enough to sustain their lives during the severe drought.
It has been two weeks since the mother and cub found shelter next to the well.
This well is not only a place to drink water, but also a gathering place for many animals within a 5km radius.
Every time the sky gradually darkens, the mother lion and her cub come here to drink water.
The steam rising from the well made the surrounding air somewhat more pleasant.
The lion cub happily chased its shadow on the ground, enjoying the rare coolness.
The noon weather was extremely harsh, the sun shining straight down without mercy.
The mother lion’s fur was darker due to the dust.

But despite being tired, she still tried to protect her cub, keeping an eye on the surroundings.
Every time the lion cub crept closer to the edge of the well, the mother lion would growl softly to remind her.
However, the lion cub was still active, loving to explore everything new.
In the sweltering heat, the cool water in the well became a source of joy for the little lion.
That day, the lion cub came to the well earlier, dipped its feet in the water, and curiously waded in.
The mother lion felt something was wrong but still let her cub play, believing that it was just hanging around the edge of the well.
Not long after, a herd of elephants appeared in the distance.
They were also on their way to this precious water source.
When they saw the mother and cub lions near the well, the elephants stopped to observe.
At the head of the herd was a large male elephant, standing out with its long, curved tusks.
From its eyes and roar, it could be seen that it was very thirsty and had become irritable.
The mother lion realized the abnormality, she was alert and raised her defensive posture.
The male elephant suddenly roared loudly, approaching the well with a ferocious appearance.
The mother and cub lions were on guard, growling in response, but the difference in size and strength was clearly too great.
The lion cub quickly climbed up the edge of the well, half of its body still soaked with water.
Seeing the competitor too close to the water source, the male elephant became even angrier.
It pounced, using its trunk to strike down hard on the edge of the well.
The mother lion rushed forward to push her cub away, but it was too late.
The male elephant used its trunk to wrap around the lion cub and lifted it into the air.
The lion cub panicked, struggling, its claws clinging to the air.
The weak cry of the lion cub rang out, making the mother lion even more panicked.
The mother lion bared her fangs and roared, threatening the elephant to release her cub.
However, the male elephant did not stop, it even drowned the lion cub in the water in the well.
The well became noisy, water splashed everywhere.
The lion cub was almost exhausted, its breath was ragged in the cold water.
The mother lion’s roar became more and more intense, but could not make the elephant falter.
Just when the situation was at a critical moment, a forest ranger’s water truck appeared.
A forest ranger named Mosi sat in the truck and immediately realized that something was wrong.
He quickly stopped the truck and grabbed a long stick to chase the elephant away.
Ignoring the danger of being attacked by the lioness, Mosi ran straight towards the male elephant.
He shouted loudly, waving his stick, signaling the elephant to back off.
The male elephant was still aggressive, tightly wrapping the lion cub in his trunk, roaring threateningly.
The mother lion stood next to Mosi, growling and glancing at him nervously.
The struggle lasted for 10 minutes, making the atmosphere even more tense.
Mosi tried to get close enough to scare the elephant and let go of the lion cub.
Finally, the elephant let the lion cub fall to the ground, after being chased away by Mosi.
At that moment, the mother lion rushed up and roared, chasing the elephant away from the well.
Mosi quickly approached, knelt beside the lion cub lying on the ground, gasping for breath.
He gently picked up the lion cub, and stroked its wet fur, soaked with water and dirt.
The lion cub had almost no strength to scream, its whole body trembling.
Seeing this, Mosi immediately cleaned its body to check for injuries.
The mother lion slowly turned around, watching with worried and cautious eyes.
Seeing Mosi trying to help her cub, the mother lion only growled softly, not attacking.
Mosi carried the cub to the side of the water truck, where he had a medical kit.
There, he placed the cub on a clean cloth, opened the medical kit.
Mosi injected the cub with a dose of medicine to help it recover, hoping it would overcome its critical condition.
Time passed slowly, everyone held their breath and watched.
The mother lion rubbed her head against the side of the truck, whimpering softly as if asking for help.
Mosi told himself that if the cub did not wake up soon, he would have to take it back to the center immediately.
About 10 minutes later, signs of recovery appeared.
The cub stirred slightly, opened its eyes slowly, and let out a weak groan.
Mosi breathed a sigh of relief, gently placing his hand on the poor animal’s head.
Although a little shaky, the cub was awake and could lift its head to look around.
Mosi decided not to hesitate, immediately taking the mother and cub to the national park’s medical center.
He used a tarpaulin to line the truck bed, then picked up the cub and placed it on it.
He signaled the mother lion to jump into the truck bed with her cub.
With her sharp senses, the mother lion understood Mosi’s actions and jumped in.
When everything was ready, the truck started rolling away from the familiar well.
At the center, medical staff immediately ran out to welcome her.
Mosi briefly explained the condition of the lion cub being attacked by an elephant.
A team of veterinarians quickly came to give the lion a general check-up.
They diagnosed that it only had minor scratches on its legs and its body was weakened due to fatigue.
The doctors carefully cleaned the wound, injected anti-inflammatory drugs and gave it more fluids.
The mother lion was led to a safe care area, separate but still close to her cub.
The medical staff constantly monitored the situation, making sure the lion cub did not get any infection or complications.
Mosi stood outside the care area, discussing the recovery process with his colleagues.
Everyone wanted to release the mother and cub back into the wild soon.
After a long night, the lion cub began to feel better and was able to eat a little.
The next morning, the doctors continued to check and concluded that the lion cub was stable.
It could walk, although it was still a bit limp, but it would gradually recover completely.
The mother and cub met again in the care area, rubbing their heads intimately.
Seeing that scene, everyone felt warm, forgetting all the dangers that had just happened.
The doctors decided to keep them at the center for two more days to ensure their health had fully recovered.
Mosi took the opportunity to visit, gently stroking the lion cub’s back, his eyes shining with joy.
When the detention period ended, the doors of the care area opened and the mother and cub were released.
They walked back to the dry grasslands, leaving behind a touching story of maternal love and compassion between humans and nature in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.
