Husband takes photo of wife in woods, looks behind her and says, “No.” On July 19th, Howard Ma and Lorie Arnison were doing a short hike in Canon’s country, Alberta.

It was to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

They were near Troll Falls, a forested trail popular with families and dayhikers.

But for some reason, no other hikers were around.

So Ma took the opportunity to take a picture of Lorie.

Just as he adjusted his phone, he spotted something behind her that made his blood run cold.

A large grizzly bear had stepped onto the path less than 50 ft away, which was taken from their phone after the incident.

Ma was sharply heard saying to his wife, “Lori, no! Stop! Come back!” She turned slowly to see the animal standing motionless, watching them.

Ma began recording on his phone, knowing that you shouldn’t run from grizzlies and that he had no bear spray.

So, the couple started backing away.

The bear followed slowly, snorting and occasionally rising on its hind legs.

Over several tense minutes, it finally closed the distance, at times lunging forward in bluff charges.

Arnison’s phone had captured this moment when the bear came within meters of them.

In a final desperate call, Ma raised his arms high to make himself look big, and he let out a roar.

Arnison instinctively did the same beside him.

They roared together.

Then to their amazement, the bear slowly turned and disappeared into the woods.

The couple made it back to the parking lot and later shared the story, a warning of what to do if you encounter a grizzly.
